That wasn't supposed to happen

Today started out rough. Daniel started on another vomiting spree sometime in the middle of the night, and kept it up for several hours. The Dude came over at 4:30am as usual so that I could go to work, and I made the decision to take the day off instead. So I got the kids up and ready to go to school, he loaded them up and took them, and I crawled back into bed with Daniel. At some point, The Dude came back and brought some Gatorade and ginger ale - I vaguely remember him coming in to the house and leaving again.

Daniel and I got up around 11:00am and puttered around the house for a bit. I figured that since I had an unexpected day off, I could maybe get some stuff done around the house. The Dude had to be at work at 11:00am, so I knew that I wouldn't be hearing from him for a while.

A little after noon, my phone rang - and it was him. I had a really bad feeling, and as soon as I answered the phone I knew that I was right.

"Babe, I'm headed to the hospital. I fell and I'm pretty sure I broke my wrist."

Crap.

We talked for a few minutes until he got to the hospital, and then the texting started. He kept me updated as things were happening. At 1:13pm, I got the text from him - "And its broken"

Crap.

Crap.

Crap.

I met him at the hospital and took him back to work to fill out paperwork, and then dropped off his prescription and picked Alex up from school. We had to run a couple of errands and then I had to get back here to make supper for the kids. After we were done with that, we made supper for him and his mother and ran that over to their apartment, and then ran a few more errands.

Needless to say, he's not a happy camper right now.

So now we wait until he sees the ortho to find out what the plan is from this point. All I know is that he is miserable and in pain, and I hate to see him like this. I'll be out of town all day tomorrow for a Scout outing with all of the kids, so once we get back I'll be able to check on him and make sure that he's ok. But it looks like he's out of commission for a little while - at least until the pain eases up and he can start to function again.

It could be worse. It could be worse. It could be worse.

It. could. be. worse.

Volleyball with a side of pain

We got up this morning and prepared for another fun-filled Saturday morning full of volleyball games for Emily.

Unfortunately, it didn't turn out that way.

She played her heart out through the first match, but they lost.

That's Sarah in the stripes, line judging.
Emily has on the long black shorts and tall white socks.
Then before the second match started, she and her teammates decided to explore. They found this set of steps that went up from the gym and they wanted to see what was at the top of them. It was the weight room. So they came back down the steps.

The Steps of Doom
And that's where the day went horribly wrong. Emily slipped or tripped or stumbled or something and went down the last 3-4 steps on her back. And if you look closely, you'll see that they're cement. No padding.

Long story short, Ex1 took her to the hospital, and I followed. The Dude took the boys and my van and went back to the house while we took care of her.

We honestly thought that she was fine. We figured that they'd do x-rays and say that nothing was broken and send her home - but we were ok with that because then we'd know that she was fine. After a lot of poking and prodding, a few hours, and several x-rays, it was determined that she did indeed end up with some minimal compression fractures in two of her vertebrae. The ER doctor feels that she won't need any sort of treatment or anything because they are minimal - but he wants her to take it easy for a few days and then follow up with our doctor on Monday.

So Ex1 gave me a ride back home since The Dude had taken my van, and Emily went and hung out with some friends to watch a movie (that had already been planned) for a few hours. She came home and crashed  on the couch pretty soon afterwards, and I'm just allowing her to sleep there tonight. If she's comfortable, I'm not going to make her move.

I swear, this week has it out for me for some reason. We had our drama from the other day and then this today - hopefully this is the end of it, because I'm exhausted and I need sleep.

Oh wait....was there a holiday today?

For those of you who expected me to be all sappy and drippy because it's Valentine's Day - forget it. Ain't going to happen. Even though I am in a relationship now (a very happy one), I still don't really like this day.

But still, for my bah humbug attitude about the day, this was still too cute. I forgot to have Alex fill out his Valentine cards for school, even though the list of names came home over a week ago. So we got up a few minutes early today so that he could fill out the cards and get them ready to take to school. He was thrilled and was even more thrilled to come home with his bag of goodies. OK, so I confess that I might have swiped a lollipop and a pack of Smarties out of his bag after he went to bed - just because I don't like the day doesn't mean that I shouldn't get to reap some of the benefits from it. Besides, he doesn't need all of that sugar. Yeah, that's it. He doesn't need the sugar......

Anyway, I might have had a better attitude about this particular day if I hadn't decided to crash and burn in my living room this morning. Yes, I fell. I was walking around, cleaning stuff up while I was on the phone (hands-free) and I stepped on a stray hanger that someone left on the floor. It slipped out from under me and I crashed. Hard. But in that slo-mo fall (in my head it was slo-mo) I realized that I was about to bash my head against the sewing machine stand and so I twisted as I went down and landed between the sewing machine and the chair. That twist proved to be the wrong move, since my lower back has been screaming at me ever since.

I took Daniel to school and made it over to The Dude's house - he wasn't in much better shape because of some issues that he has with his neck, so we ended up laying around watching some horrible zombie movie.

OK, he watched, I napped.

That's romance, right there. Zombie movies and a nap.

After I picked the boys up from school, I came back home and worked on laundry (slowly) and cleaning up around the house (even more slowly). I did manage to get quite a bit done, in between taking breaks to sit down against the heating pad.

And then I cleaned out one of my email accounts (one down, three to go)...

I think I might try to finish my taxes tonight too. Or maybe I'll just be lazy and read instead.

And hopefully by tomorrow, The Dude and I will both be able to move with minimal pain.
