Just a day...

Nothing terribly exciting happened today, and for us, that's generally a good thing.

I had two main objectives for the day: mow the trees and find the stench in the fridge/freezer.

Mowing the trees....ah, I love my yard. NOT. When I say that I'm "mowing the trees" I get some strange looks. But seriously, look at this:

Those are trees. I don't know what kind. I think someone told me locust trees. All I know is that they're little offshoots from the bigger ones in front of my house, and I hate them. They are everywhere.

Don't believe me? Look at my flowerbed (before & after I cleaned it out. Again. I just did this about a week ago.)

But at least once the trees are mowed down, it does look better. For a day or two, then the trees grow up over the grass again.

The boys kept themselves amused while I finished mowing.

Oh, and mowing a yard that has lots of patches of dirt in it when there's a wind advisory means that the person doing the mowing comes out filthy dirty. Really.

That post-mowing shower felt so good.

After we got done doing that, Daniel had to go to the doctor for his pre-school physical. Assuming that I can get all of the financial BS worked out and he can still go, he had to have the physical done first. Everything with that was fine, other than his hearing. He needs to go for some more testing for that, so we need to get that done ASAP before his insurance gets cancelled. It's always got to be something.

I don't know what it is with my fridge/freezer, but for the past week or so there has been a steadily growing stench coming from it. Now, I'll admit that I'm not the best at getting rid of leftovers in a timely manner, but I've been doing better. Add to that the fact that the stench was just as strong in the freezer, and I was a bit confused.

Anyway, I pulled it out today and cleaned behind and under it and didn't find anything overly gross - just the nasty pan of condensation water (that didn't stink) so I cleaned that out and dried it. I took everything out of the freezer and scrubbed it, and then did the same with the fridge. There was no rotten food in there at all - but I did determine that the smell is actually coming from the air that circulates within the fridge/freezer. If I open the door and it's not running, it's not that bad - but as soon as it kicks on and starts circulating the air, it's awful. I'm kind of wondering if there isn't something down in the fan or motor or whatever it is that runs the thing. But regardless, I'm calling the landlord tomorrow. Hopefully he'll do something about it.

We also had a few storms roll through this evening. They weren't bad by any means, but we did get some hail:

Rumor has it that the last photo was actually on The Weather Channel tonight - but since I don't have cable, I didn't get to see it. Boo!

So anyway, like I said, not a spectacular day by any stretch of the imagination, but just another day in our lives. Now that the boys are in bed, I need to finish up some laundry, clean up the kitchen, and do some other stuff around the house.

Maybe I'll be more entertaining tomorrow. ;)

  1. I had a yard once that stayed over-populated with little tree shoots. They're a pain!

  3. We have the tree shoots in the wooded areas of the pasture. Jason was out mowing today on the 15' bushhog and I know he took great pleasure in mowing them down.

  4. Hey, Mare, I like the enchanted forest idea! LOL I may have to try that - wonder if the city would let me get away with it....

Melissa - you let him use a bushhog? Yikes. ;)

2 years. I just have to put up with it for 2 years, if my plan holds together. Then I can get my own place, which will have none of these whatever-they're-called-trees within a 5 mile radius.

  5. Why does the hail wreck our flowers and bedding plants but can't beat down your trees? LOL. We have had a heavy downpour the last day or so. Finally clearing up. I'm grateful we haven't flooded our basement!

  6. Too bad I mowed before the hail hit - maybe that would have made it easier. Actually, they're ridiculously easy to pull out of the ground - they just come back with a vengeance. They are evil.

  7. My mother told me that if you eat a piece of hail it brings good luck. Of course, you have to risk going outside in a hailstorm and dodging flying ice, but after that it'll be smooth sailing.

  8. I have little trees too. They're a nightmare. Is there any way of dealing with them permanently?

  9. PUT A BAG OF CHARCOAL IN A PAN IN THE FREEZER AND ALSO IN THE FOOD KEEPING SIDE. IT MAY TAKE A WHILE BUT IT TRULY TAKES THE STINK AWAY. I HAD A PROBLEM YEARS AGO. I LEFT A NEIGHBOR IN CHARGE WHILE WE WENT AWAY FOR VACATION. WHEN I GOT HOME AND OPEN THE DOOR TO GO INTO THE HOUSE IT SMELLED LIKE SOMEONE DIED. I LOST A WHOLE SIDE OF CUT UP BEEF. A STORM BLEW A FUSE AND WE LOST EVERYTHING INSIDE THAT ICEBOX. YES I WAS UPSET WITH THE NEIGHBOR BECAUSE SHE LIED TO US AND SAID SHE HAD BEEN THERE THE DAY BEFORE WE GOT BACK AND EVERYTHING WAS FINE. LIAR.WE TRIED EVERYTHING TO GET RID OF THE SMELL. THEN SOMEONE TOLD US TO USE CHARCOAL. YOU MAY HAVE TO CHANGE IT OUT A FEW TIMES BUT IT WILL HELP.OF COURSE POUR THE CHARCOAL IN PANS AND JUST SET THEM IN SIDE AND FORGET ABOUT IT.
